One of the highlights of last night’s match between FC Barcelona and Alaves was the clash of heads between Gavi and Conechny that left the two players unable to continue and both of them had to undertake a trip to the hospital to ensure there were not any long-term implications of the blow.
Meanwhile, the respective coaches of the two teams had not only to worry about the condition of their players but also to look for their replacements in the match.
Hansi Flick decided to bring on Fermín López for Gavi, and thus, the 21-year-old midfielder had to come into the match in far-from-ideal conditions.
However, he was quite satisfied after the full-time whistle as he spoke to the media. As Mundo Deportivo has reported, Lopez was particularly happy with getting the three points in this game:
“Winning today was important, knowing that Real Madrid dropped points yesterday. We will fight for La Liga until the end.”
The Barcelona midfielder also recalled how the Catalans were able to win this game and the stiff resistance put up by the visitors:
“Alavés defended well, especially in the first half. In the second half, we improved, and the goal came. We’re calm, but it’s true that creating chances against low blocks is difficult. Flick told us at halftime to take advantage of the spaces and play faster.”
There is no doubt that this was a hard-fought win, but also one which can have significant implications for this La Liga campaign.
With this win, the Catalans have reduced their deficit at the top of the table to four points, and with both the first-two placed teams, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid, facing each other in their upcoming league game, Barcelona will have another sure chance to improve their position in La Liga next week.
