US President Donald Trump’s press conference with members of the Juventus squad stood behind him has gone viral, with Team USA international Timothy Weah describing the situation as ‘a bit weird’.

Juventus were in Washington DC ahead of last night’s Club World Cup opener against Al-Ain but prior to kick-off, an entourage including head coach Igor Tudor and USMNT duo Timothy Weah and Weston McKennie were stood behind the President in the Oval Office as the Republican covered a range of topics including conflict with Iraq and the place of women in men’s sport.

Why Juventus met Trump

The situation came about with the Bianconeri present in the US capital for their aforementioned CWC opener but according to the Athletic, the logistics that brought Juve stars and staff to the Oval Office are shrouded in mystery.

Some of the staff and players were reportedly not even aware that they would be present at this press conference until the event started. Furthermore, senior staff at U.S. Soccer were also not informed that two of their players would be visiting the White House.

Weah on the ‘bit weird’ situation

Speaking after Juventus thrashed Al-Ain on Wednesday night, Weah commented on his visit to the Oval Office to meet the President, stating “It was all a surprise to me, honestly — they told us that we have to go and I had no choice but to go. I was caught by surprise, honestly. It was a bit weird. When he started talking about the politics with Iran and everything, it’s kind of like, I just want to play football man.”

Trump made sure to single out Weah and McKennie during the conference, saying “We have two great American players. Where are you, my American players?” Before adding “Fantastic, so good luck. I hope you’re going to be the best two players on the field.”
