Werder Bremen are yet to decide whether to activate Isaac Schmidt’s buy clause, with director Clemens Fritz keeping options open.

The Leeds United full-back, who can also play wide, joined on a season-long loan last summer after Switzerland boss Murat Yakin told him he would make his World Cup squad if he secured regular minutes. Leeds paid around £3m for Schmidt, and the clause is thought to be in the low millions without causing a PSR loss.

Schmidt has made 15 appearances in Germany and has started about a third. He scored on his debut in a 3-3 draw with Bayer Leverkusen in August.

Across the last seven games he has played 101 minutes and is yet to complete a full 90. “It’s normal that he’s not happy with his current situation. Isaac did a decent job in his appearances,” Fritz told DeichStube.

Olivier Deman has moved ahead of him in the pecking order, leaving Bremen to weigh up the clause. Fritz added, “We value Isaac highly for his versatility. His intensity and tenacity give every coach a good feeling,” in comments to Bild.

Schmidt did not start a league match during Leeds’ Championship title season, going from January to late March without a league outing. He made 14 appearances for the club, starting twice in the FA Cup.

Meanwhile, fellow Leeds loanee Max Wober is considered very unlikely to stay. He has not featured in the Bundesliga after a muscle tear before the league began in August, and he had two knee operations last season. Although he hopes to return before the end of the campaign, it seems very unlikely Bremen keep him; his Leeds deal runs to 2027, while Schmidt’s lasts until 2028.
