Albion were given a two-point deduction for breaching profit and sustainability rules (PSR) in late April, which threatened to relegate them from the Championship.

However, despite a final-day defeat to relegated Sheffield Wednesday, the Baggies' stellar end-of-season run was enough to maintain their second-tier status as they finished four points clear of the drop zone.

Despite West Brom kicking their final ball of the campaign around a fortnight ago, there has been an intriguing update regarding their deduction.

It had been a tumultuous season for the Baggies, with Ryan Mason and Eric Ramsay both sacked and the club staring down the barrel of relegation to the third tier for the first time in over 30 years.

Then came their saviour as former long-serving player James Morrison took over as caretaker manager for a third time, embarking on a superb run that would result in him being given the job on a permanent basis.

Within that time, reports emerged that the Black Country club could be handed a points deduction for breaching financial rules, which came to fruition as they were deducted two points.

Now, football finance expert Kieran Maguire has shared details of a key document on his X account that provides a clearer picture of what happened.

Above an image of the document, he said: "I'm sure it's just an amazing coincidence but the EFL initially charged West Brom with a £2.035m PSR breach, which would have increased the points deduction by one point.

"It then reduced the breach by £86k to take it down to two points.

"Fortunately for all West Brom's results improved to make the points deduction irrelevant."

West Brom have had to be shrewd with their finances over the last year, and they will likely need to continue in the same manner heading into the summer.

In the 2024-25 financial period, the Baggies generated £8.2 million in player sales while spending £5.4 million on player purchases, resulting in a net trading profit of £2.8 million.

Critically, the departures of Tom Fellows, Caleb Taylor and Torbjorn Heggem are not included in those accounts, and, given that Fellows and Taylor were homegrown talents, that will put the club in a healthier financial position in the next reporting period.

The Black Country club also have several high earners out of contract at the end of June, which would open up further funds should the club decide not to extend their deals.

Josh Maja, Daryl Dike, Charlie Taylor, Karlan Grant and Jed Wallace earn an estimated combined £117,000 per week, equating to more than £7.5milllion per year, according to Capology.

In the recent past, the club have spoken about the need to lower the squad age, sign players with resale value, and to work within financial limits, so expect West Brom to act in this manner during the summer window.

After how the season unfolded, the club's hierarchy will surely be aware of the need to get their recruitment spot on this summer, but they must also be savvy with how they spend their funds.
