Leicester City are monitoring West Bromwich Albion amid uncertainty over a potential points deduction that could reshape the Championship relegation battle. Both clubs are fighting for survival, with City in 23rd and West Brom 20th.
The Telegraph reports West Brom have been charged with exceeding PSR limits for the three-year period ending 2024/25, though the club said in a statement they believe they remain fully compliant with EFL rules. If the charge is upheld, a penalty could follow. EFL regulations say any sanction should be applied in the season the charge is brought, with only three weeks remaining.
The base punishment for a PSR breach is 12 points, according to the BBC, with reductions if the overspend is smaller. Less than £2 million brings three points, between £2 million and £4 million brings four, and the deduction increases with the breach. Mitigation can apply if losses reduce season by season, and City had one point returned for a positive trend, though their recent appeal failed after a six-point penalty earlier this season.
The breach has been described as small by The Telegraph, so any deduction could be lower. Any points removed would bring West Brom closer to City in a tight bottom-end scrap.
Pundits have questioned the timing during a five-team fight, with Ally McCoist highlighting the significance of when any deduction lands and Jeff Stelling warning it could become very messy if it rolls into next season, both on TalkSPORT.
West Brom visit Preston North End at Deepdale on Saturday at 3pm. City travel to Portsmouth the same day for a must-win match at Fratton Park, kick-off 12.30pm.
