West Brom have been docked two points for a profit and sustainability breach, dragging Albion back into the Championship relegation picture with two matches left. The club disagree with an independent commission’s verdict, delivered on Friday after a two-day hearing.
According to ExpressAndStar.com, an independent commission upheld an EFL charge and confirmed the sanction late on Friday, only 24 hours after a two-day hearing, timing viewed as unprecedented in such cases, and a PSR change on community spending underpins a breach of less than two million pounds.
Albion beat Watford 3-0 on Tuesday to stretch an unbeaten run to nine and move eight points clear with two fixtures remaining.
With two games left, James Morrison’s side now need one point to secure survival. Ipswich Town, second and chasing automatic promotion, visit The Hawthorns on Saturday lunchtime, live on television.
Oxford United are on 44 points, six behind, and retain a faint lifeline. If West Brom lose to Kieran McKenna’s visitors and Oxford win, the fight goes to the final day at Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough, where a point would then be enough.
A goal difference swing would also be needed for Oxford to leapfrog Albion. West Brom are -9 to Oxford’s -15, a six-goal buffer, though two Albion defeats and two Oxford wins would naturally erode it.
