A tense Emirates FA Cup battle at the London Stadium ended up in a penalty shootout, with West Ham edging Brentford thanks to five fantastic penalties.
There were chances at both ends in a 2-2 AET draw, but a brilliant display from West Ham’s captain and their centre-backs saw them through to the next round.
The hopeful Hammers will take on Leeds in the quarter-finals at home and hope that this win gives them the confidence to push on in their bid for Premier League survival, as they sit inside the drop zone on goal difference.
A fairly quiet game for the Frenchman… that was until he was gifted a Panenka penalty from Dango Ouattara. Overall, it was a mixed performance as his distribution was poor and he could have done a little better for Brentford’s first goal, but he looked assured from corners and made a couple of decent saves.
Given an opportunity in the cup and could have done better. He looked shaky on the ball and his side was often exploited throughout, especially for Brentford’s first goal.
A brilliant performance. He looks really solid and at home next to Disasi and exemplifies no-nonsense defending. Equally, he offers a real threat from corners and set pieces. He topped off his excellent display with a phenomenal penalty to win the shootout.
Never fall in love with a loan player – or at least that’s what all West Ham fans try to tell themselves, but it’s getting harder and harder. Many were reluctant to bring him in, but ever since he joined, he has completely reshaped this West Ham side. Once again, he was solid and impressive at the back. Unlucky not to score a worldie from 30 yards out.
A decent performance. Not too much he had to deal with defensively, but there were a couple of good link-up plays with Bowen on the right. Definitely a solid option off the bench.
He never stops running, and the West Ham fans love him for it. He remains a constant threat from set pieces and wins nearly every header possible. Another fantastic penalty.
Dynamic once again in the middle. Equally good in attack and defence, he is key in West Ham’s transitional play, as much of it goes through Mateus Fernandes. He was also relentless in tracking back. West Ham truly possesses a phenomenal talent in the Portuguese U21 captain.
An incredible performance in the middle, and he didn’t look out of place against Premier League opposition. He helped the midfield tick for much of the game and is definitely one to watch in the future.
A decent game from Traoré, who offers blistering pace on the counter that can give defenders nightmares. He lacks a clinical edge in front of goal but made up for it with relentless tracking back. Won the penalty that Bowen slotted home.
Many Hammers fans were surprised to see the Brazilian start as it was his first game back from injury, but that didn’t show. He never stopped running and constantly gave his all for the side. He still lacks a bit of quality in front of goal, but hopefully that will come with time.
Took the criticism of his current form personally as he delivered an absolute clinic. Bowen scored a brace — one from the spot and one with a poacher’s instinct. He looked lively throughout and constantly wanted to push forward. This performance should do wonders for his confidence, just when West Ham needs it most.
Lost possession at times but remained a threat going forward. Unlucky not to score. West Ham fans will be holding their breath as they await news on his injury.
Looked good coming on, and unlucky not to score. Clinical penalty from the spot.
Looked very impressive when he came on and helped shore up the defensive line.
A decent performance from the Argentine as he added more purpose going forward. Nearly scored a beauty but was denied by a brilliant save from Kelleher. Well-taken penalty.
Not his best outing as he looked a step behind Kanté, who he replaced. Hopefully just an off day, as he can be unstoppable on his day.
