West Ham United have placed a hefty £80m valuation on breakout midfielder Mateus Fernandes as Manchester United step up their pursuit ahead of the summer transfer window.
The 21-year-old Portuguese midfielder has emerged as a primary target for the Red Devils, who are eager to overhaul their midfield under head coach Michael Carrick.
Fernandes has been a rare bright spot in an otherwise gruelling Premier League campaign for the Hammers.
Having arrived from Southampton last summer in a deal worth around £40m, the youngster has adapted seamlessly to top-flight life.
Renowned for his combative work rate, press resistance, and intelligent passing, the box-to-box midfielder has quickly established himself as one of the league’s most coveted assets.
His impressive displays have drawn praise from pundits and attracted interest from European heavyweights, including Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, and Arsenal.
However, Manchester United have firmly placed themselves in the driving seat. The Red Devils are plotting a major midfield reshuffle, with Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte set to depart, and view Fernandes as a long-term cornerstone.
Significantly, Fernandes is understood to be extremely keen on a move to Old Trafford and is known to idolise United captain Bruno Fernandes.
While West Ham are publicly holding out for an £80m package, their leverage in negotiations is precarious as they remain locked in a fierce relegation battle.
Should the Hammers drop to the Championship, they may be forced to raise over £100m in player sales to stabilise their finances—a reality their rivals are poised to exploit.
