West Ham suffered a fresh injury concern when Jean-Clair Todibo withdrew during the warm-up before their 2-0 defeat at Aston Villa, complicating preparations for Leeds United’s FA Cup quarter-final.
John McGinn and Ollie Watkins scored either side of half-time at Villa Park, leaving Nuno Espirito Santo’s team 18th and four points behind 15th-placed Leeds, who drew 0-0 with Brentford on Saturday. The Athletic reports Todibo indicated a calf issue during a passing drill while consulting medical staff.
The French centre-back, a £33m signing last summer, had been set to start in a back three with Axel Disasi and Konstantinos Mavropanos. Midfielder Freddie Potts was drafted in instead as Espirito Santo switched late to a back four. If it is a calf problem, the 26-year-old could be a major doubt to face Leeds in two weeks.
Star winger Crysencio Summerville is also sidelined with a calf problem, missing West Ham’s last two matches and a first Netherlands call-up, so he too is a doubt to face his former club inside a fortnight.
The loss was only West Ham’s second in seven league games, but it arrives at an awkward juncture, with Leeds next after the international break and Wolves at home a week later. “It is not good to go into the international break with this feeling. We didn’t play good, we have to react, do things better, and we are in the fight,” said Nuno Espirito Santo, speaking to Sky Sports.
