Nuno Espírito Santo’s first team squad will be returning for pre-season soon - at least those who aren’t currently competing in the World Cup in North America.

There is a lot of uncertainty over the likes of Mateus Fernandes and Jarrod Bowen, among others, as transfer interest emerges.

The future of Callum Wilson is also up in the air, with the forward’s contract set to expire at the end of the month.

The 34-year-old made 32 appearances in the league last season, including 11 starts, and he contributed seven goals and one assist.

However, it remains to be seen whether the striker will remain at the London Stadium beyond the month.

According to Claret & Hugh, Wilson held talks with West Ham on Tuesday regarding a possible contract extension.

The 34-year-old has interest from both Coventry City and Hull City, who earned promotion to the Premier League.

But the Hammers are not giving up their hopes of retaining the experienced forward for next season.

Espírito Santo will be keen to have someone in the squad capable of scoring consistently, with the club’s sights set on earning promotion back to the top flight at the first attempt.

Wilson initially joined West Ham last August as a free agent following the expiration of his contract with Newcastle United.

While he was not a consistent presence in the starting lineup, the veteran striker proved to be a useful asset, and he featured prominently during the run-in.

But Coventry and Hull can both offer Premier League football next season, with Wilson just five shy of reaching the 100-goal mark in the division.

How West Ham fans feel about Callum Wilson’s future

Reactions from West Ham fans have been mixed on whether Wilson should stay at the club, with some optimistic he can tear up the Championship.

While others simply feel he would provide strength and depth behind the likes of Taty Castellanos and possibly Dom Ballard, if he could be signed from Leyton Orient.

However, there is scepticism over whether a deal can be agreed when Premier League football is on offer elsewhere.

And some fans believe he just isn’t worth having around at this stage of his career anymore.

Some kind of a deal for Wilson where he could be entitled to another year if the club are promoted could help convince him to stay.

At 34, there are certainly risks regarding his fitness and availability, especially with his track record, but his scoring record is impressive and there’s no doubt he’d play well in the Championship.

After a difficult first half of the season, he was a great option in the second, and having him around as cover and rotation will make him a great asset.

The allure of the Premier League is tempting, especially as he is so close to the 100 goal mark, but West Ham could be back there in just 12 months, while Coventry and Hull are likely to struggle next season, so that should be factored into his thinking.
