The Hammers are keen on Sorba Thomas, but how close are they to striking a deal?

West Ham United supporters are still yet to see any fresh faces arrive through the doors at the London Stadium, and whilst rumours over a move for a Championship winger have intensified in recent days, the truth regarding that situation may not be a welcome one for Hammers fans.

West Ham United have signed Venezuelan winger Keiber Lamadrid following his loan spell during the second half of last season, but that is it so far in East London in terms of incomings.

The £85 million sale of Mateus Fernandes and £60 million sale of Crysencio Summerville give the club and new director of player recruitment Nils Koppen a boatload to work with, but things are yet to ramp up for the Hammers.

Links to Stoke City winger Sorba Thomas have re-emerged in recent days, as the West Ham Way Patreon previously reported over two weeks ago of the club's interest in the Welshman, whilst Alan Nixon has now confirmed via his Patreon that the former Huddersfield Town star is wanted by the club.

However, a recent update on the situation has just dropped, as West Ham supporters may regret learning the truth.

Thomas, 27, joined Stoke last summer for a fee believed to have been less than £2 million from League One Huddersfield Town, penning a three-year deal in the Potteries after an uninspiring loan spell in the French top flight for Nantes.

Fast forward one year, and Thomas has just endured the most prolific season of his career to date, with ten goals and 11 assists in 45 Championship games in a struggling Stoke attack.

West Ham's interest came as little surprise, though, as now reported by Stoke Sentinel's Pete Smith, the Hammers are yet to make contact with the Potters regarding a move for Thomas.

This isn't to say that interest in the winger isn't there, though Koppen and his recruitment team are yet to contact the North Staffordshire side regarding a move that would likely exceed the £10 million mark.

Following this recent update, this saga is certainly one to keep an eye on moving forward.

Having been linked to an array of players this summer, including Thomas, this recent update won't come as a welcome one for Hammers supporters.

Whether Thomas was a player they would have liked to have seen at West Ham or not, the news regarding the lack of contact will surely infuriate supporters of the club, who may feel their side are allowing the window to slip away from them.

With Summerville having left for Saudi Arabia, another option on the left flank will be a necessity for Nuno to identify and bring to the club, and Thomas would fill that void and then some.

However, a move doesn't look to be happening just yet, as frustration will more than likely be the overriding feeling amongst the Hammers fanbase right now.

Indeed, Thomas enjoyed his best personal season of his career to date, with 21 goals and an assist in the league, directly contributing to 41 per cent of Stoke's league goals across the campaign.

At 27, Thomas is not one for the future, but for the here and now, and at Championship level, there are few better around than the Welshman, as reflected by his statistics.

Summerville showed glimpses of his quality in the top flight for the Hammers, and prior to his move to West Ham, shone with Leeds United in the Championship, and could complete a similar trick with Thomas.
