West Ham have submitted a bid for Monaco’s Soungoutou Magassa and are pushing to complete a deal for the Monaco midfielder, according to The Guardian. Graham Potter is determined to strengthen his midfield options as he looks to stamp his authority on the squad. “Talks are taking place between West Ham and the Turkish club regarding the final details of a deal for the Mexico international,” the report noted on Edson Álvarez’s move to Fenerbahce, which frees up space for new arrivals.
Targeting the 21-year-old Magassa is an ambitious move that underlines West Ham’s desire to inject dynamism into their midfield. The France Under-21 international made 29 appearances for Monaco last season and featured in the Champions League. “They want to add more power and need someone to set the tempo and control play from deep positions,” the piece explained.
Potter’s shopping list does not stop there. West Ham have also monitored Rennes’ Djaoui Cissé, Werder Bremen’s Romano Schmid and Feyenoord’s Quinten Timber. Southampton’s Mateus Fernandes remains a No 8 target, while Lens midfielder Andy Diouf appears Inter-bound. Besiktas have reportedly tabled an offer for Emerson Palmieri after the arrival of El Hadji Malick Diouf.
This rebuild has intent, but much depends on whether West Ham can land Magassa and provide Potter with the profile he needs for control in midfield.

West Ham fans will feel excited by the ambition shown here. Magassa fits the profile of a modern defensive midfielder with the energy and athleticism to anchor play. His experience in the Champions League at just 21 is significant. However, there is a note of caution. The Premier League demands more physicality and speed of thought than Ligue 1, and young talents often need time to adapt.
Graham Potter clearly has a plan, and moving Álvarez on was bold. If Magassa comes in, plus another creative No 8, West Ham’s midfield could look completely different by September. Still, these deals need to be finalised quickly, with rivals already active in the market. The chase for players like Quinten Timber and Kenneth Taylor suggests Potter wants technical quality, not just steel.
The big question is whether West Ham can close these deals without being gazumped by bigger clubs. Fans will be hoping for swift movement. If Magassa signs, this could be one of the smartest deals of the summer. If not, the rebuild risks stalling before it begins.
