Het Nieuwsblad are reporting that Westerlo are working on a deal to sign veteran Algerian striker Islam Slimani. The 36-year-old spent the second half of each of the past two seasons in Belgium and looks to be coming back for a third stint. Westerlo are one of the youngest sides in the Pro League and would certainly benefit from the veteran striker’s experience at this level.
Over the summer it looked like Slimani’s time in Europe was over as he moved to Algeria to sign for CR Belouizdad. In 11 games for the side he scored three goals. Last season he played 13 games for Mechelen to end the year, scoring three goals and grabbing four assists. His impact was evident in how he helped link the play for the side with his intelligent movement and high work rate for someone of his age.
During the 2022/2023 season he played 16 times for Anderlecht and had an immediate impact. He scored nine goals for the side and grabbed one assist. The striker has also played for Leicester, Monaco, Sporting CP, Lyon, Newcastle and Brest.
