Michael Carrick’s position as Middlesbrough head coach is under threat following the end of the Championship season.

It was exclusively revealed by Football League World that the 43-year-old is in danger of losing his job after the team missed out on the play-offs for a second successive year.

This has been Carrick’s first role in management, and he did lead Boro to a top four finish in his first campaign in charge.

However, a 10th-placed finish in the table this season could now be enough for Middlesbrough to opt for a change in the dugout.

"Dividing fans" - Claim made on Michael Carrick's Middlesbrough future

When asked about Carrick’s future, FLW’s Middlesbrough fan pundit, Jasper Hudson, claimed that it might be time for him to go.

He believes the team has gotten worse year-on-year under the manager, and that a fresh approach might be needed in order to turn things around.

“Michael Carrick being sacked is an interesting one, it’s dividing a lot of fans,” Hudson told Football League World.

“I think, for me, I’d probably be leaning towards removing him. I think we’ve got worse year-on-year.

“This season was really disappointing, especially considering the final six or so games that we had and what we ended up needing points-wise to get into the play-offs, and we were unable to achieve that.

“I think that was really disappointing, and a major let down.

“The squad was good enough, it wasn’t particularly hard, it was one of the lower points tallies to make the play-offs in the last 10 or so seasons. So I think it has to be disappointing. It has to be a failure of a season.

“I don’t know if Carrick can turn it around because it’s just gotten worse and worse, and has been a very similar pattern throughout the last two years.”

Middlesbrough missed out on a play-off place by just four points with their 10th-placed finish in the table.

Carrick has been given time to succeed at Middlesbrough

Carrick has now overseen two-and-three-quarter seasons at Middlesbrough and the team is no closer to gaining Premier League promotion.

He has been hamstrung in the transfer market at times, however, with the club selling their best players regularly, such as losing Chuba Akpom, Morgan Rogers and Emmanuel Latte Lath respectively.

But inconsistent results have cost them in the league in both of the last two campaigns, which is a worrying pattern.

The team has also started the last two seasons slowly under Carrick, which has put Boro on the back foot from the jump in the race for promotion.
