Gary O'Neil has been linked with replacing Liam Manning at Norwich City

Gary O’Neil has outlined what he’s been up to since departing Wolves last year amid speculation linking him with taking over at Norwich City.

It was reported earlier this week that the likes of Mark Robins and O’Neil are being considered as potential replacements by the Canaries’ hierarchy.

However, no decision has yet been made on Liam Manning’s future ahead of their midweek clash away to Derby County.

It has been a difficult start to the campaign for the Norfolk outfit, who have earned just eight points from their opening 10 fixtures, winning just twice.

O’Neil is currently out of work after he was sacked by Wolves last season with the team struggling in the relegation zone in the early stages.

O’Neil, who appeared on Monday Night Football alongside Jamie Carragher this week, has claimed that he’s been working every day to learn more about the game since his departure from Wolves in December.

He highlighted his second season at Wolves, which was cut short after 16 league games, as the time in his managerial career that he’s reflected on most over the last 10 months, instead of the time he enjoyed keeping the team, and Bournemouth, in the Premier League.

“This is the bit that I’ve learned the most from [his sacking at Wolves], this is the bit that will make me better,” said O’Neil, via Sky Sports Premier League on X.

“Because since I’ve been out of there, I’ve not stopped working.

“I spoke to Jamie off-air around, I’ve been off for nine months but I’ve just been working every day for myself.

“I’ve been watching every game, I’ve been meeting set piece coaches, I’ve been talking about where the game is headed, trying to stay up to date with it.

“Because it’s easy to look back on these (his first season at Bournemouth and Wolves) and enjoy them, but these are the bits (his second season at Wolves) where you really learn, when you’re up against it and it was really, really tough, a tough moment for us.”

Manning still has some time to turn around his future at Norwich, with the team back in action again on Tuesday evening.

A trip to a struggling Derby could given them the chance to earn their first win since 30 August.

Norwich have failed to earn a victory in their last six league games, which has left them sitting 20th in the Championship table, just one point clear of the relegation zone.

The Canaries will face John Eustace’s side in a 7.45pm kick-off at Pride Park.

Gary O’Neil is clearly eager to get back to work amid Norwich links

It remains to be seen whether O’Neil would consider taking the step down to the Championship after working in the top flight.

But he has twice been overlooked by Nottingham Forest this season, as well as West Ham, so he may have to go to the second tier to get back to work soon.

It’s clear from his interview on MNF that he is eager to get back into management, so Norwich could be appealing.

However, Manning should still be given some time to turn things around as he’s only had 10 games, which isn’t enough for him to make a real impact.
