‘What more?’ – Carlo Ancelotti jumps to defence of Real Madrid boss Xabi Alonso | OneFootball

Former Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti has this week launched a stern defence of successor Xabi Alonso.

This comes amid recent criticism of the Spaniard on the part of the Blancos faithful.

Real Madrid are of course fresh off a disappointing couple of results over the course of the last week.

After first being condemned to defeat at the hands of Liverpool in the Champions League, Los Blancos then stuttered to a goalless stalemate with Rayo Vallecano on the La Liga front.

Not only the results, but Real’s performances left a lot to be desired at both Anfield and Vallecas, culminating in Xabi Alonso being targeted by sections of the club’s fanbase.

Speaking during an interview with Diario AS this week, the subject of such criticism was therefore put to the aforementioned Carlo Ancelotti.

And the ex-Blancos boss, now in charge of the Brazilian national team, was quick to defend Alonso, whom he considers to be doing a ‘spectacular’ job to date at the Santiago Bernabéu:

“I can’t give him any advice. I watch all of Real Madrid’s matches because I want to see how the Brazilians are doing, and I think the team is doing very well. They’ve won almost every game, but unfortunately, you can’t always win in football. Sometimes you have to draw. One thing I learned at Real Madrid is that a draw here is the prelude to a crisis (smiles). No jokes. You have to get used to it. We already know that the best way to evaluate a coach is through results, and so far, the results have been spectacular. They’re top of the league and among the top eight in the Champions League. What more can we ask of Xabi!”

Ancelotti continued:

“I see a solid team, especially at the back, and very strong in attack. Mbappé is doing very well and Bellingham is back. I think Xabi can succeed without any problem.”
