We look at 4 players out of contract in League Two and ready for the challenge of League One that Matt Hamshaw should look at for Rotherham

Rotherham United’s transfer window has got off to a slow start, relative to the other teams in League One, but it is still early days in the market and, as of now, it appears Rotherham have a specific plan when it comes to their transfer strategy.

Kian Spence was the first signing of the Matt Hamshaw reign, an all-action midfielder who is at a good age of 24, wanting to push for League One football. He arrived on a free from Barrow with a good pedigree from League Two football, prepared to be coached and played in the above leagues.

As per Alan Nixon, Rotherham have also reportedly shown an interest in Fleetwood Town pair Ryan Greydon and Captain Brendan Wiredu.

Both players starred against Rotherham back in August, but both are coming to the end of their contracts. Rotherham have reportedly submitted bids for the pair, hoping to acquire their services.

These recruitment methods appear to be following a similar pattern of strategy – bringing through players around the age of 25, coming to the end of their contract and ready for the step-up to League One.

With this in mind, FLW have picked four players that Rotherham should look at with this new transfer strategy.

Denver Hume

At 26, Hume is coming off the back of his best season yet, securing 12 assists from left wing-back.

The Sunderland youth player has recently begun to show the promise he once had at Sunderland, starring in Grimsby Town’s latest League Two campaign.

Going forward, he topped the League’s stats for most assists and, defensively, his energetic displays put him in the top 15% for tackles won in the division, whilst in the top 5% for dribble success.

Out of contract and looking to move on from Grimsby this season, at a good age of 26, is exactly the sort of acquisition Rotherham should be looking at to fit into their transfer strategy.

Not to mention how Rotherham are in desperate need of a left-footed wing-back.

Jamie Jellis

Highly linked with a move to League One in the January transfer window, Jellis was a key cog in the Walsall machine as they fired their way to the playoffs.

However, with the club falling short of promotion, Jellis’ time may be at an end as the 24-year-old midfielder's contract has come to an end. This has sparked interest in League One clubs again, with the all-action midfielder being a star man in League Two last season.

A similar style of player to Rotherham’s recent signing Spence, Jellis operates between the boxes, offering a creative flare in the final third and a resilient tackler achieving 80% of tackles won.

Energetic and creative would be the essential compliment to current Rotherham midfielders Joe Powell and Spence.

Brendan Wiredu

Someone Rotherham fans will already be aware of, Wiredu, is one of the better choices for the Millers to opt for when looking for a centre-back.

With the news of Cameron Humphries leaving to join Port Vale and Hakeem Odoffin leaving the club, the Millers are in desperate need of an athletic, ball-carrying centre-half to slot into Matt Hamshaw’s back three.

With one year left on his contract, there should be no better place to look than Fleetwood Captain Wiredu.

Experience in the league above, comfortable on the ball and quick across the ground, at 25, Wiredu has all the capabilities of being an exceptional League One defender and a potential future Miller captain.

Zac Williams

Again, another centre-half to add to the list, but a quality one at that. Left-sided centre-half with youth on his side, Williams is ready to step up his development and would be a strong option for the Millers.

Only 21, Williams will be a strong option for Rotherham to consider as his time with Crewe has now come to an end and a short journey over the Pennines will be a great way for Williams to develop under a fantastic coach such as Hamshaw.
