Albion's poor run of form continued at The Valley on Tuesday night

West Bromwich Albion's recent woes continued on Tuesday night, as the Baggies succumbed to a dramatic defeat at The Valley against Charlton Athletic, only increasing the current pressure on Ryan Mason's shoulders.

Indeed, it was Sonny Carey's strike in the third minute of second-half stoppage time which gave the Addicks all three points in a crucial encounter for both sides, with Albion's recent run of form now extending to just two wins in their past 10 Championship matches.

The pressure had cranked up from those at The Hawthorns on Saturday afternoon following a goalless draw against rock-bottom Sheffield Wednesday, and frustrations with the newly-appointed 34-year-old grew stronger following developments in South-East London.

After what was viewed as an overly positive start to his reign in this part of the West Midlands, Mason's first run of below-par results and performances in a full-time managerial position has seen the Baggies slip away from the early-season pace-setters such as Coventry City, Stoke City and Middlesbrough, with a third defeat in four games seeing them slip into the second tier's bottom half ahead of the remaining midweek fixtures on Wednesday night.

Unsurprisingly, the manner of West Brom's result and overall performance has split opinion amongst the fanbase, particularly after they heard what Mason's individual thoughts on the manner were.

When asked to reflect on the 90-plus minutes of action in the capital, during which his side could have fallen behind on 36 minutes as Charlton captain, Greg Docherty, saw a penalty well saved by Josh Griffiths, Mason, unsurprisingly, cut an extremely frustrated figure in his interview with official club media.

“It’s another loss and it’s not good enough," he stated.

“Ultimately, the responsibility is on me. At the moment, I’m not doing enough to get enough from the players.

“I feel like the players put the effort in today. We were there, we were in the game. We had opportunities in both halves that we needed to make count and we didn’t," Mason explained.

“To concede how we did right at the end is a reflection on me and what I’m trying to create here, and at the moment, it’s certainly not good enough," the Albion boss added.

Such a verdict has clearly divided opinion amongst supporters, with one debating whether the former Tottenham Hotspur assistant will be able to address the recent slump in results and performance levels.

Another frustrated Albion fan believes that Mason's persona in the interview showcases a head coach who 'knows' his time in the hotseat could be coming to an abrupt end, just five months after Shilen Patel appointed him in B71.

Another Baggie is yet to be convinced that his side have shown any identity in the opening 14 games of the season.

However, some supporters were quick to place the blame on those on the pitch, stating that Mason will pay the price for their below-par displays.

Despite statistics such as one shot on target from 13 attempts making for grim reading, another Albion fan remains optimistic that the tide will turn sooner rather than later.

Shilen Patel could be forced into Ryan Mason, West Brom dilemma amid recent form

Mason's appointment in June followed what was a rather chaotic 2024/25 season, during which four permanent or interim managerial appointments were made, or somewhat forced due to the departures of Carlos Corberan and Tony Mowbray.

Of course, there is an expectation that surrounds West Brom in the Championship when taking recent history into account, and it's glaringly obvious that recent performances and results haven't lived up to said standards.

Owner Shilen Patel handed the former midfielder a three-year contract in June, showcasing the faith he had in a young head coach to steer the club in a positive direction after previous uncertainty.

However, it's fair to say that this is yet to come in the eyes of many Albion supporters, with some already calling for change.
