Queens Park Rangers are still interested in signing Rhys Norrington-Davies from Sheffield United, but the Blades want to sign a defender beforehand.

QPR’s summer had been slightly stunted by the delayed departure of Marti Cifuentes, who had been on gardening leave, and delayed appointment of former Stade Rennais boss Julien Stephan.

That has perhaps bled into the average start to the season on the pitch, with the R’s held to a 1-1 draw at Loftus Road by Preston North End on the opening day of the campaign, before a 2-1 loss to Watford at Vicarage Road.

They have a very exciting squad and Stephan will be expected to implement a progressive and intriguing style of football in West London, but experience and improvement in defence is seemingly required, and that is perhaps why they are pursuing a move for Norrington-Davies.

QPR still want Rhys Norrington-Davies but Sheffield United holding off

According to a report from West London Sport, Queens Park Rangers are still interested in signing versatile defender Rhys Norrington-Davies from Sheffield United in this summer’s transfer window.

However, as the report goes on to say, Sheffield United are holding off on sanctioning the move until they themselves have brought in another defender.

Norrington-Davies, who came through the academy in South Yorkshire after a stint at Swansea City, has made well over 50 first-team appearances for United, as well as over 100 appearances out on loan for the likes of Barrow, Rochdale, Luton Town and Stoke City.

Traditionally a left-back, Norrington-Davies has also been deployed on the left-side of a back three, as well as occasionally playing as a centre-back in a two, too.

The move for the 26-year-old, who has been capped 13 times by Wales, could be accelerated by Sheffield United’s pursuit of another left-footed defender, Ben Mee.

Mee, who has been released by Brentford this summer, is reportedly wanted by Sheffield United, and it could well be that his arrival prompts the departure of Norrington-Davies.

Busy end to the window for QPR

In the same report by West London Sport, it is confirmed that former Bayern Munich centre-back Liam Morrison is set to sign a new deal at QPR, having joined last summer.

As well as that, both Paul Smyth and Michael Frey have been offered new deals but are yet to sign, with the latter said to be close to agreeing new terms with the Hoops.

It has also been suggested that the club remain in negotiations with Belgian outfit Lommel over the re-signing of Koki Saito, who spent last season on loan at QPR, albeit there is serious rival interest from Derby County, where he is more likely to end up.

QPR have made some intriguing additions this summer, signing some of the best talents from League One with Amadou Mbengue, Kwame Poku, Rumarn Burrell and Richard Kone all arriving from Reading, Peterborough United, Burton Albion and Wycombe Wanderers respectively.

As well as that, they have also added Kealey Adamson from Australian A League side Macarthur, with Karamoko Dembele completing his obligatory permanent move after an initial loan stint from Stade Brest last season.
