22-year wait for top-flight glory is over as Gunners now chase Champions League triumph
Arsenal are celebrating being confirmed as Premier League champions for the first time in 22 years.
The Gunners’ maiden top-flight title since the famous 2003/04 ‘Invincibles’ squad under Arsene Wenger was officially secured on Tuesday night after rivals Manchester City were held to a 1-1 draw away at high-flying Bournemouth, who have now qualified for European football for the first time in their history under outgoing head coach Andoni Iraola.
That result on the south coast means that Arsenal hold an unassailable four-point lead at the summit with only game left to play this season, having piled the pressure on Pep Guardiola’s side with a nervy 1-0 home win over relegated Burnley on Monday night in which Kai Havertz netted the only goal of the match at the Emirates Stadium.
City will have to make do with winning both domestic cup competitions during what it has transpired will be Pep Guardiola’s final campaign at the helm before he is likely replaced in the Etihad Stadium dugout by former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca this summer
Arsenal, meanwhile, could yet pull off an unforgettable double as they now prepare to face holders Paris Saint-Germain in a blockbuster Champions League final in Budapest on May 30.
City’s crucial draw at Bournemouth that followed Arsenal’s win over Burnley 24 hours earlier means that a thrilling Premier League title race is now officially over with one round of games to spare and will not go down to the final day of the season this weekend.
City host Europa League finalists Aston Villa on Sunday, at the same time as Arsenal make the short trip to meet London rivals Crystal Palace, who have made the final of the Conference League.
Rehearsal: Arsenal’s players celebrate with a cardboard replica of the Premier League trophy at London Colney
The result in that clash is now immaterial, meaning that Mikel Arteta can ring the changes ahead of the crunch showdown with PSG, should he so choose.
However, what follows the Palace game will be of major significance, as Arsenal will be formally presented with and lift the Premier League trophy after the final whistle at Selhurst Park.
They already appear to have been celebrating with a cardboard replica of the trophy at their London Colney training base on Tuesday night.
