France booked their place in next summer’s FIFA World Cup thanks to a comfortable 4-0 win over Ukraine on Thursday night. They conclude their qualification campaign with a dead rubber against Azerbaijan on Sunday evening.
However, it is not a match entirely without consequence, as players look to accrue credit in the eyes of Didier Deschamps. But there is already a significant core of players who will travel to North America regardless of form, L’Équipe understands.
Fitness permitting, there are 16 players whose ticket to the World Cup is already booked. Mike Maignan, the uncontested No.1, and Lucas Chevalier, who is set to make his France debut against Azerbaijan, are guaranteed a place.
In defence, Jules Koundé, Dayot Upamecano, William Saliba, Ibrahima Konaté, Lucas Digne, and Théo Hernandez will all travel. In midfield, Aurélien Tchouaméni, Manu Koné, and Adrien Rabiot have secured their spots, and in attack, Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé, Désiré Doué, Bradley Barcola, and Michael Olise will all travel to North America.
