White handkerchiefs and sustained whistles greeted Real Madrid at the Santiago-Bernabeu on Saturday, as home fans rounded on the team during the first half against Levante.
According to L'Équipe, the jeers began in the warm-up and intensified in the opening period. They followed consecutive 2-3 defeats, to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup and to Albacete, a second-tier side, in the Copa del Rey.
Alvaro Arbeloa, appointed to replace Xabi Alonso on 12 January, saw his side reach the interval to powerful whistles after an uninspired display.
Jude Bellingham, captain Federico Valverde and Vinicius Junior were the main targets of the crowd’s anger.
The atmosphere reflected a level of frustration rarely seen at the stadium.
