Middlesbrough beat Watford 5-1 at the Riverside to climb from fifth to fourth, with Morgan Whittaker and Tommy Conway sharing four goals in a decisive Championship win.

Whittaker whipped a free kick into the top corner in the sixth minute to set Boro on their way. In first half stoppage time, David Strelec glanced in Whittaker's cross to double the lead.

After the restart, the Hornets hit back as James Abankwah finished from close range (48.) following a Kevin Keben Biakolo header. Whittaker quickly restored daylight with a close range finish (58.).

A half time switch brought Matt Targett on at left back and his supply pinned the visitors back down that flank. A handball by Abankwah gave Boro a penalty. Tommy Conway converted from the spot (75.).

Conway then struck again in the second minute of second half stoppage time, sweeping in after a Strelec-led break to cap the scoring.

Boro registered 20 attempts with nine on target as their attack clicked into gear. The Hornets produced 12 efforts and three on target.

Next, Boro visit Wrexham. The Hornets host Coventry City.
