Why Alexander-Arnold and Watkins aren’t in the England squad | OneFootball

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ollie Watkins have both been left out of the England squad by Thomas Tuchel for the upcoming international break. 

The Three Lions will face Uruguay on Friday 27th March and Japan on Tuesday 31st March at Wembley Stadium as they continue preparations for this summer’s FIFA World Cup in North America.

Tuchel has named a bumper 35-man squad for the two friendlies, but there is no room for Alexander-Arnold or Watkins, who have 54 international caps between them and have experience of playing at major tournaments.

It has raised the possibility of both players missing the World Cup; neither of them have enjoyed particularly strong campaigns, with Alexander-Arnold struggling to find form since joining Real Madrid from Liverpool last year, while Watkins has been much quieter in front of goal for Aston Villa than previous seasons.

Tuchel may be using this international window to scope out potential replacements for the pair, although the German coach has explained that he has omitted them because he already knows what they bring to the team and he wants to look at other players.

“It’s a tough decision, and Trent is a big name – a huge talent with an impressive career. I know what he can give us, but I’ve opted for others,” the England boss told the media at Friday’s squad announcement.

“We were very good in September, October, and November, and I know what Trent can offer. I’ve also faced challenges when he’s played against my teams.

“The players in camp at right full-back must push to earn their spot on the plane to the World Cup.”

Tuchel has split the England camp into two, inviting 19 outfield players and four goalkeepers for the first half of the window to stake their claim for a place at the World Cup.

From Saturday morning, 11 established squad members will join the camp and some players will be released some players to have a group of 21 or 22 players plus a goalkeeper.

“I am happy and excited to be back,” Tuchel added. “This March camp is a unique one. We have already qualified, and our players are at a crucial stage in their club seasons. It’s the last chance to impress and compete for a spot. That is why we have spilt the squad.”
