Why Arsenal must beat Man City in the Community Shield – Opinion

The Community Shield may not carry the same prestige as the Premier League or FA Cup, but victory could provide the perfect springboard for Arsenal ahead of the new campaign.

Arsenal will face Manchester City in the Community Shield on August 16 in their final pre-season fixture before kicking off their 2026/27 Premier League title defence against Coventry a week later.

There are a number of fans who don’t take the Community Shield too seriously, which is understandable in comparison to other competitions. But at the end of the day, it still counts as a major honour in Arsenal’s trophy cabinet, with the Gunners having lifted it 17 times.

The first of those triumphs came in 1930 when Arsenal edged league champions Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 at Stamford Bridge, just months after winning the club’s first-ever FA Cup with a 2-0 victory over Huddersfield Town.

Back then, only around 18,000 supporters were in attendance to watch what was then known as the Charity Shield. Fast forward almost a century and the fixture has become one of English football’s traditional curtain-raisers, attracting crowds of more than 80,000 when staged at Wembley.

Arsenal know what it takes to beat Manchester City

Arsenal’s most recent Community Shield success came three years ago when Mikel Arteta’s side defeated Manchester City 4-1 on penalties after Leandro Trossard’s dramatic stoppage-time equaliser forced the match beyond 90 minutes.

It wasn’t the first time Arsenal had got the better of City in the competition either. Arsène Wenger’s side produced a superb 3-0 victory in the 2014 Community Shield, recording one of the most convincing wins in the fixture’s recent history.

This time around, however, the challenge is unlikely to be as straightforward.

Arsenal’s defence could once again have to contend with Erling Haaland, who has established himself as one of world football’s most feared goalscorers, while City enjoyed the better of last season’s meetings between the two clubs.

The Gunners failed to beat Pep Guardiola’s side, with their best result coming in a 1-1 draw at the Emirates thanks to Gabriel Martinelli’s late equaliser.

A trophy could provide the perfect platform

Personally, I believe it would be fantastic if Arsenal could begin the 2026/27 campaign by defeating Manchester City and lifting the Community Shield.

Not only would it give the players an early trophy, but it could also provide a valuable psychological boost over one of their biggest title rivals after City enjoyed the upper hand in last season’s encounters.

Success would also generate further belief among supporters as Arsenal look to retain the Premier League title for the first time since the club completed its historic hat-trick of First Division championships in the 1930s.

The Community Shield may not be viewed as highly as the Premier League, Champions League or even the League Cup by some supporters, but if you’re in the competition, you should be trying to win it.

I’m sure most Gooners would rather start the season with silverware than without it, especially if that means beating one of the country’s strongest teams.

Hopefully Arsenal can lift the Community Shield on 16 August at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium, the original home of the competition before its move to Wembley, and head into the new campaign full of confidence and momentum.
