Coventry City have completed the signing of Miguel Angel Brau from Granada on a free transfer.
Coventry City have kicked off their summer business with a deal for Granada left-back Miguel Angel Brau.
The 23-year-old came through the ranks at the Spanish club, and after starting out with the B team, he made 26 appearances for the team last season as they just missed out on a play-off place.
However, with his deal expiring, there were always doubts about his long-term future, and Brau has decided to take that next step in his career.
That’s after Coventry announced the defender will join the Midlands outfit on a free transfer when his contract officially expires with Granada at the end of the month.
It will be a new experience for Brau, and he will link up with a Coventry squad that will hope to push for promotion under Frank Lampard after their heartbreaking defeat to Sunderland in the play-off semi-final in May.
This could signal the start of a busy summer for the Sky Blues, and here we outline THREE reasons why they have moved to sign Brau…
Firstly, he is going to appeal to Coventry due to the fact he is available on a free. It’s not like Coventry have to scrimp and search for bargains, but you always take the opportunity to strengthen if you can get a player for no fee.
The recruitment team and Lampard obviously feel Brau has quality, so to get him in like this represents excellent business by the club.
It also reduces the pressure on the player, and he will have time to adapt and settle to his new surroundings without a big transfer fee hanging over him.
Furthermore, at 23, this is a smart long-term addition for the Sky Blues, and it’s exciting to see how much Brau will improve over the next four years.
He has been a late developer in terms of playing at a high level, with the previous campaign the most appearances he had made in the Spanish second tier.
Brau handled that well, and there is a feeling that there’s plenty more to come. Now, the job of Lampard and his coaching team is to help the player, and allow him to show his talent in the Championship on a consistent basis.
With Jake Bidwell and Jay Dasilva already at the club, you can be sure that questions will be asked about whether Coventry needed another left-back.
Of course, there’s a strong probability now that at least one will depart, but with both players having been solid in the Championship, it shows the faith that Lampard has in Brau.
At 6ft, he is a big size for a full-back, and like many Spanish players, he will be technically assured in possession.
