Wolves visit Maidenhead United on Wednesday, a landmark friendly for the non-league hosts and new head coach Cesar Peixoto’s first match in English football. According to ExpressAndStar.com, the trip was promised as part of Max Kilman’s transfer.

Two years ago Wolves sold Kilman to West Ham for £40 million. Maidenhead were involved through a sell-on clause from 2018, when the defender joined Wolves from them for £40,000. The National League South club were initially due 20 per cent of the profit, but waived half to help the move, and in return Wolves agreed to play at York Road.

The pay-out, believed to be around £4m, remains the largest sell-on fee received by a non-league club. Two years on, it continues to shape a team with deep roots and clear ambition.

Formed in 1870, Maidenhead were among 15 entrants to the first FA Cup. York Road opened a year later and is recognised as the oldest senior ground in continuous use by the same club. With modernisation needed and hopes of one day challenging for the Football League, they are in talks over a new home, and the Kilman money has been essential in this transition, Jon Adams said, with the club focused on sustainable growth.

Wednesday’s game will also boost revenue. A crowd of more than 2,000 is expected, including around 1,000 Wolves supporters, above a typical league gate, and adult tickets cost £14. “We are really grateful to Wolves for following through with this,” said Adams.
