Man United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe reportedly liked the idea of appointing Fulham boss Marco Silva, but the club’s leadership team favoured Amorim.

They opted to cast their net wider in their search for a permanent successor to Erik ten Hag, and time will tell whether they made the right decision.

No manager has lasted beyond a third year at United since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.
