Manchester United have reportedly been handed a major boost in their pursuit of William Gomes, despite two new clubs entering an already red-hot race for the Brazilian winger.
Gomes has emerged as one of the most exciting prospects in Liga Portugal after a superb season for FC Porto, who strolled to the title with only two losses and 18 goals conceded.
The 20-year-old starlet, who has drawn comparisons to Bayern Munich winger Luis Diaz, returned 13 goals and two assists in all competitions, earning praise from Porto legend Pepe, who described him as an “incredible player, a very dedicated boy, who has spectacular ambition”.
However, it is Gomes’s all-round play, combining electric speed and dizzying dribbling, which has really made him shine since a €10 million move from Sao Paulo last year.
Porto included an €80m (£69m) release clause in his contract at the Estádio do Dragão, which runs until 2029. Francesco Farioli considers the youngster, who operates primarily on the right but can play on the opposite flank, a key member of his squad.
However, local media reveals the Dragons will “not stop listening to offers” if they arrive from top clubs, despite their Italian manager’s preference to keep Gomes.
Fabrizio Romano reveals Atletico Madrid are frontrunners to strike a deal, though reports in Spain indicate interest from the Premier League could threaten this pursuit.
Manchester United are joined by rivals Arsenal and Newcastle United in their admiration of Gomes, with the Red Devils looking for reinforcements on the left wing. INEOS are said to have already made contact to gauge the viability of a move.
Serie A rivals AS Roma and Juventus are also understood to be in the hunt, according to a report from Italy.
Both clubs have made initial enquiries, though Roma are believed to also be targeting Mason Greenwood in a deal which could net United a considerable windfall thanks to a significant sell-on clause.
The report states that while Porto are “currently not considering a transfer”, even if sources in Portugal suggest the contrary, they are prepared to come to the negotiating table if a €45m offer is submitted.
This would constitute a 50% reduction from Gomes’ release clause, explaining why United remain in the hunt for the Sao Paulo native despite a deal looking exorbitant at first glance. The long-term future of Patrick Dorgu, whether as left-back or left wing, will likely decide whether INEOS escalate their interest.
Elsewhere, the Red Devils are also understood to be exploring West Ham winger Crysencio Summerville as an option, with a growing sense that INEOS’ focus on a midfield revamp is forcing the club to consider cheaper options out wide.
