FC Barcelona manages to bring together players from all over the world. Language, race, personal beliefs and other things have no say in which players end up coming to the club or not. What matters for Barcelona, on the other hand, is their ability to deliver on the pitch.
Under Hansi Flick this season, many players have stepped up and they all belong to unique and distinct cultural and national backgrounds. However, while the showcase of unity and brotherhood is endearing and there is no denying that this Barcelona team behaves like a family, there are difficulties as well.
One main issue can be the language barrier, as players often come from places where Spanish is not the primary language for them and they do not even need to learn it most of the time. However, at Barcelona, it is almost a necessity to understand the language in order to commutative with the rest of the team.
For Wojciech Szczesny, this same language barrier-related issue has become sort of a reality. Not knowing Spanish, the former Juventus goalkeeper is mainly fluent in Polish, Italian, and English. However, to communicate with the rest of his team, and especially his defenders, the player has a rather unique way of getting his message across.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the 34-year-old makes use of fellow Pole Robert Lewandowski to communicate with his teammates who primarily understand Spanish. He often gives the message to the centre-forward, and he brings it forward to the other players.
In the recent game against Atalanta, for instance, Szczesny relied on Lewandowski to help set up his wall during set pieces and also to deliver his message to the players during corner kicks as well. Due to their experience together from the past, it seems that both the Polish striker and goalkeeper are able to communicate and interact rather easily.
However, with Szczesny now the team’s primary goalkeeper due to Hansi Flick’s new stance on the goalkeeping situation, he may need to get more and more accustomed with the language. Interestingly, however, other reports have suggested that some players would prefer Inaki Pena in goal, and perhaps the language barrier could be a possible reason.
