Wolfsburg sporting director Pirmin Schwegler found himself short of words when discussing his new club’s Bundesliga loss against his former club on Saturday afternoon. Schwegler joined the German Wolves from Eintracht Frankfurt this past November. The 39-year-old, thanks to the latest defeat, may find himself trying to build a 2. Bundesliga squad this coming summer.

Time runs out for Wolfsburg

The 1-2 loss against Eintracht counts as a massive blow for Wolfsburg’s survival hopes. The Lower Saxon Autostädter now see their Bundesliga winless run extended to 12 straight fixtures. Under newly appointed head coach Dieter Hecking, Wolfsburg have only picked up one point from four matches. On 21 points with only five matchdays remaining, the arithmetic remains quite grim.

An immensely frustrating aspect of the Eintracht match concerns the fact that Wolfsburg outshot their guests 22-10. Attacker Patrick Wimmer slipped and missed out on a chance to tap an early opener into an empty net in the 12th minute. Both Schwegler and Hecking referenced the slip in their post match interviews with Sky Germany.

Schwegler and Hecking totally resigned

This one is pretty hard for me,” Schwegler told Sky. “We created plenty of chances, but they weren’t that compelling. We also got caught napping on [Eintracht’s] second goal. It’s all too sloppy, too easy, and happens too often.

There are so many setbacks week after week,” Schwegler continued. “Patrick Wimmer’s miss was emblematic of the entire season. It hurts, but we’ll keep fighting. There’s no other option.

Of course, it affects the team when you see us slipping there,” Hecking added of Wimmer’s miss. “All we had to do was tap the ball into an empty net. That would likely have been the moment when we could have turned things around. That’s naturally bitter for everyone.

The chances were there to take something from this match, but we didn’t do it,” Wimmer himself added in the mixed zone. “In so many cases, just a little bit was missing. [In the end] We lost and don’t know how or why.
