Wolves join Premier League’s longest winless starts

Igor Jesus’ first Premier League goal condemned Wolves to another defeat as Nottingham Forest ran out 1-0 winners at Molineux on Wednesday night.

The loss leaves Rob Edwards’ side stuck at the bottom of the table, still searching for their first win after 14 games. Wolves have picked up just two points so far this season (D2 L12) - the joint-lowest ever at this stage of a top-flight campaign (adjusted to three points for a win), matching Sheffield United’s start in 2020/21. It’s also the first time Wolves have failed to win any of their opening 14 matches since 1983/84.

This miserable start now puts Wolves among the longest winless runs at the beginning of a Premier League season:

Wolves’ bleak start also places them among the longest winless openings in Premier League history. Only three teams have ever begun a season worse: Sheffield United, who failed to win any of their first 17 matches in 2020/21; QPR, who went 16 games without victory in 2012/13; and Swindon Town, winless in their first 15 fixtures back in 1993/94.

Wolves now sit alongside Newcastle United’s 2021/22 side on 14 games, jointly holding the fourth-longest winless start to a Premier League campaign. With results elsewhere going against them, Wolves are now 12 points adrift at the bottom.

A combination of factors has contributed to their slide, and if things don’t improve, Wolves could be heading for a Championship return. Worse still, they might threaten one of the most unwanted records in Premier League history: the fewest points ever in a single season.

That unwanted honour belongs to Derby County, who managed just 11 points in 2007/08, winning only one of 38 matches and losing 29.

Next up, hoping to turn the tide and halt this run of poor results, Wolves host Manchester United at Molineux on Monday night, before heading to the Emirates to face Premier League leaders Arsenal.
