ExpressAndStar.com reports that day one of its Portugal assignment to cover Wolves’ pre-season began before dawn and ended with a smooth arrival on the Algarve.

A 4am alarm led to a swift lift to Birmingham Airport, with fears of long Jet2 bag drop and security queues. In the end, both were cleared in a combined 45 minutes.

Breakfast at Popeyes at 6am preceded boarding for Faro. The flight of two hours 50 minutes passed quickly with intermittent sleep.

After landing, the reporter moved swiftly through passport control using an Irish passport, helpful at Faro where queues can be long when several flights arrive. With baggage collected, a shuttle bus took them to the hire car a short drive away.

Usually a passenger on pre-season trips, this was the first time driving abroad on the opposite side of the road. An availability-driven complimentary upgrade switched the booking from a Fiat Panda to an Opel Corsa, and the automatic gearbox eased the journey to the apartment.

Base for the week is a seaside town on the Algarve within driving distance of Wolves’ camp. After stocking up on food, the evening was spent getting ahead on work.
