A world-class coach is reportedly close to joining Liverpool and has even made his first transfer request.
Let's make it clear, we never want to see a coach leave the club. Until the last second, anyone employed by Liverpool will always have the fans' backing.
At the end of the day, though, the reality is that long-term Slot's position as manager of the club just looks simple untenable at this stage.
The Dutchman has become a little out of his depth. Liverpool's run since being eliminated by Paris Saint Germain in the Champions League last season has been unsustainable.
The level of performances have dropped off a cliff. If Liverpool had not won their first five games of the season, they could be close to the same position as Tottenham at the moment.
It's because of those five games, that Liverpool still have a whisker of a chance of qualifying for the Champions League. Although results absolutely have to turn around.
And it's because of this that Slot is still in the job.
He'll likely keep his job until the end of the season. Liverpool will give him that much grace, considering he won the Premier League title.
However, unless Slot drastically turns around the club's performances, a change in the summer is inevitable.
And then must come the question, if not Slot, who? There aren't many world-class managers in world football lining up to join Liverpool.
But there is one world-class coach in waiting and he's strongly affiliated with the Reds.
Xabi Alonso went unbeaten during an entire Bundesliga campaign with Bayer Leverkusen. He is an elite coach, up there among the world's best and he's available.
According to El Nacional, he has reportedly practically agreed a move to join Liverpool.
Even more than that, Alonso has also made his first transfer request and it's a bit of a surprising one.
The report claims that Alonso, wants to bring in Arda Guler from Real Madrid as a potential replacement for Mo Salah.
Guler was key under Alonso, during his brief time at Madrid, making 14 goal contributions in 34 games under the Spaniard. The Turkish attacker is only 21-years-old and he's got the creative prowess that would make him an ideal fit for Liverpool.
It would be a smart transfer, because Guler can also play in a number of different roles.
Obviously, Real Madrid won't want to let the Turkish star go, but he's not their indispensable player. Because of their star studded cast, they may just be open to doing a deal with Liverpool for Guler.
So, this is one to keep an eye on especially if that agreement between Liverpool and Alonso is true as the report claims it is.
