In an official statement, the Egyptian Football Association has called on FIFA regarding the "Pride Match" in support of the LGBT cause during the 2026 World Cup.
FIFA had announced that during the 2026 World Cup, one game would be designated as the "Pride Match" to support the LGBT cause. The draw resulted in this initiative being associated with the match between Egypt and Iran. Since the announcement, reactions have come swiftly. After Iran labeled this decision as "irrational," the Egyptian Football Association has now broken its silence, refusing to be associated with the initiative.
"We have sent a letter to FIFA, categorically refusing the organization of any activities supporting LGBT during this match. We firmly reject such activities, which are in direct contradiction with the cultural, religious, and social values of the region, especially those of Arab and Islamic societies," the statement reads, explaining that FIFA's rules "emphasize political and social neutrality, as well as the importance of maintaining this neutrality regarding political and social issues during FIFA competitions, and ensuring that football is not used as a platform to promote sensitive or particular causes."
