World Cup all-time scoring race: Messi equals Klose as Mbappé closes in

Lionel Messi has drawn level with Miroslav Klose at the top of the World Cup’s all-time scoring list on 16, with Kylian Mbappé now on 14.

Klose overtook Ronaldo Nazario’s 15 in 2014 to set the benchmark of 16, a record that survived Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022. Superdeporte notes that this tournament could yet deliver a new outright leader.

Messi opened Argentina’s campaign with a hat-trick, a display that pulled him alongside Klose.

With two group games still to play, and potential knockouts to come, the Argentina captain could add to his tally and move clear.

Mbappé struck twice against Senegal to keep pace. With this World Cup and possibly a couple more ahead, the France forward could break into the top three and perhaps even challenge the mark.
