Mexico's group stage campaign at the 2026 World Cup ended on a high note with a 3-0 victory over Czechia. As a result, the co-hosts finished Group A with a perfect record and without conceding a goal.
While 17-year-old Gilberto Mora stole the headlines with his first start, Mateo Cháves opened the scoring with a composed finish on his World Cup debut. Julian Quiñones doubled Mexico’s advantage as the scorer of the first goal of the tournament contributed to Czechia's misery.
Substitute Alvaro Fidalgo added the third in injury-time for the biggest win of the group stage for Mexico. Czechia ended their campaign bottom of the group with a single point.
Hoffenheim trio Robin Hranáč, Vladimír Coufal and Adam Hložek played from the start for Czechia, while Bayer Leverkusen's striker Patrik Schick failed to change their fortunes after coming on as a substitute.
Much to the delight of the home crowd, Mexico even had the luxury to make a substitution of goalkeepers. 40-year-old iconic shot-stopper Guillermo Ochoa appeared in his fourth World Cup. Including the famous win over Germany in 2018, Ochoa played every game for Mexico in the previous three tournaments.
