Two more African teams set for the 2026 World Cup?
Afrique du Sud/@Africa Soccer
Two African national teams have already punched their tickets for the 2026 World Cup, which will take place from June 11 to July 19, 2026, across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
After Morocco’s flawless run in their group, Tunisia secured qualification by defeating Equatorial Guinea in Malabo (0-1), thanks to a stoppage-time goal from Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane.
Egypt, who currently hold a five-point lead over Burkina Faso in Group A, could clinch qualification tonight with a victory in Ouagadougou. In fact, Mohamed Salah and his teammates would extend their lead to eight points, making them unreachable with just two group matches left to play.
Another African contender, South Africa, also has a shot at qualification. However, the Bafana Bafana’s fate isn’t solely in their hands—they’ll not only need to defeat Nigeria, but also hope for a favor from Lesotho, who must deny Benin a win.
If the Cheetahs fail to claim victory, they’ll remain either seven or eight points behind the South Africans, ending their hopes of topping the group.
It’s worth noting that, following the Carthage Eagles’ triumph in Malabo, 18 teams have already booked their spots in the final tournament. If Egypt and South Africa qualify, that number will rise to 20 out of 48.
