World Cup Qualifying: South America (CONMEBOL)

CONMEBOL finally begins to move into securing their World Cup choices. They have the longest qualification period of any confederation, which is odd as they are also the smallest confederation in terms of participating countries – just ten.

World Cup qualifying started back on September 7, 2023 and consists of 18 matchdays. In this sense it’s quite comprehensive, as every team gets to play every other team home and away. No luck of the draw for pools. It’s very pure. But it’s also SO FREAKING LONG.

Tomorrow, Jun 5, 2025 will be Matchday 15. Yes, there will STILL be three more rounds of fixtures before the final game in late September… TWO years after it started. The likelihood that a team roster that starts the process is even remotely similar to one that ends it is miniscule.

To make matters worse, CONMEBOL gets to send 60% of the federation to the World Cup, the highest percentage globally. It’s almost harder to NOT get picked. At this specific juncture, only Argentina are mathematically guaranteed qualification. All the other nine countries are still technically in the running.

This actually makes the next two matchdays very, very interesting. There’s a potential of 12 points for any team. Even last place Chile or Peru could suddenly go on a tear and finish with 22 points, possibly enough to squeak into sixth or seventh.
