Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has been approached to join a consortium interested in purchasing a stake in Liverpool.

Bezos, whose $257billion fortune makes him the world's fourth-richest man, has held talks with a group of investors keen in buying a stake at Anfield. The consortious is led by former Queens Park Rangers co-owner Amit Bhatia.

Bhatia is the son-in-law of steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal, with the Mittal family backing the proposed move.

The potential involvement of Bezos would be a fascinating move, given his profile and substantial wealth.

The 62-year-old, who also owns the Washington Post, has previously explored moves into professional sport with the Seattle Seahawks and the Washington Commanders, though did not proceed with either deal.

According toSky Sports and the Financial Times, the consortium value Liverpool at £4.5bn, though it's unclear the size of the stake sought.

The club's owners, Fenway Sports Group, purchased Liverpool for just £300m in 2010 and have since overseen a sustained period of success that has yielded twoPremier League titles, the Champions League, and four domestic cups.

Bezos could become the latest high-profile American involved with Liverpool. Basketball superstar LeBron James purchased a 2% stake in the Reds in 2011, though later traded his stake for 1% of Fenway Sports Group. FSG also own Major League Baseball's Boston Red Sox.
