The future of Max Eberl at FC Bayern remains one of the most exciting topics behind the scenes at Säbener Straße. While the sporting director has recently made a lot of sporting arguments on his side, a contract extension beyond 2027 is still open
According to Sport BILD, the chances of an extension are currently around 50:50. Although Eberl’s contract runs until June 30, 2027 and an extension can only become concrete at a later date for legal reasons, the personnel issue is already being discussed intensively internally
In sporting terms, there is a lot to be said for the 52-year-old. FC Bayern are playing a convincing season. In addition, the signing of Vincent Kompany and transfers such as Michael Olise, Luis Díaz and Jonathan Tah are considered a hit internally. Nevertheless, the final decision on Eberl’s future does not yet seem to have been made
Against this backdrop, Markus Babbel finds it difficult to understand the discussions surrounding Eberl’s personnel. In his column for SPORT BILD, the former Bayern professional made it clear that Munich’s current success is spread across several shoulders
„And they rightly talk about Vincent Kompany, but it’s not a one-man show, there are also people in the background,“ explained Babbel, putting the focus on the work of those responsible off the pitch
The 53-year-old was particularly defensive of Max Eberl: „And Maxi is also part of that, who does an incredible amount to ensure that a) the team is in a great position and b) the coach is in a great position – and still stays in the background,“ Babbel emphasized
From his point of view, FC Bayern currently presents itself as a cohesive construct. The cooperation within the management level seems harmonious and goal-oriented. „I see a team that works perfectly,“ said the former international

Babbel’s warning against recklessly changing the existing structure was correspondingly clear. Especially after the turbulent years in the Bayern management, he clearly advocates continuity
„And I think it would be almost negligent to blow this team apart now and think you’re going to bring someone in again when you don’t know: what kind of character are you getting, what kind of person are you getting? Does he even fit into this team?“ explained Babbel
For him, this results in a clear recommendation: „Why shouldn’t we extend this now? For me, it makes no sense at all.“ Instead, the current constellation is a decisive factor for Munich’s sporting success
Babbel particularly emphasizes that the Bayern management is currently acting as one – a circumstance that was not always the case in the past. „They speak one language – and we have already experienced a different FC Bayern in the past. Now they are speaking one language again. And I would find it negligent to blow that apart.“
The coming months are likely to show which course FC Bayern will take, but one thing is clear: voices like Markus Babbel’s are increasing the pressure on those responsible not to abandon the path they have taken too hastily.
