Wout Faes (27) has joined AS Monaco on loan from Leicester City until the end of the season. The Belgian has explained his move to the Principality club.
Prior to joining, Faes has spent recent months largely on the sidelines at Leicester City. Speaking at a press conference attended by Get French Football News, Sébastien Pocognoli stated that the defender had been “cast aside for non-sporting reasons” at the EFL Championship club.
Faes also gave his version of events in the East Midlands. “Honestly, there was a desire to leave, from both sides. [Last summer] there were contacts with a few clubs, but that didn’t happen, and then the manager (Martí Cifuentes) reintegrated me. For one reason or another, it didn’t work out,” said the Belgian.
The defender added that there had been contact between Monaco and his agent for the past two or three windows, without a move ever being finalised. “It didn’t happen because of Leicester’s position. There was a situation that has now presented itself, which means that the stars have aligned and I am happy to be here,” he added.
The Principality club have a buy option in the centre-back’s deal. It could be a busy summer for Faes, who has another objective. “The Belgium national team is always in my mind. Every player thinks about that. I was a starter (at international level) and then it was difficult because of the Leicester situation. The most important thing is to play matches [with Monaco]. Everything with Belgium is extra, but it comes hand in hand,” he said.
