There's considerable strengthening work to be carried out at The Racecourse Ground this summer if they're to continue their remarkable ascent of the last three years, and it gets more difficult, the closer to the summit you get. Taking the next step for Wrexham will be a big ask.

The rumour-mill has gone into overdrive regarding this particular club since their promotion was confirmed, but here are the latest transfer stories around concerning the Red Dragons.

A "Premier League Trio"

The national press has been reporting that Wrexham have targeted "a Premier League trio" as possible targets for the club this summer. The Mirror has reported that "Wrexham have set their sights on a number of Premier League veterans ahead of their return to the Championship".

The three that have been bundled together in this instance are Danny Ings and Aaron Cresswell, both of whom were released by West Ham United at the end of the 2024/25 season, while the third is goalkeeper Danny Ward, who is free to leave Leicester following their relegation from the Premier League.

All three of these players have played international football, and all three are in their 30s, so they come with years and years of experience. Ward has the added advantage of having been born in Wrexham and having been a product of their academy.

Ben Davies

The reporting of this "Premier League trio" didn't have to cover only three players, since Wrexham have been connected with plenty of other Premier League and former Premier League players since the end of the 2024/25 season.

Jamie Vardy leaving Leicester for them isn't happening, and this was confirmed at the end of April. But the position regarding the Spurs defender Ben Davies isn't as clear-cut. Davies is out of contract at the end of this season, and Football Insider has reported that "the hugely ambitious Championship club are working on a deal to land the 32-year-old Wales international on a free transfer".

But such a move would be complicated for Wrexham. Davies is 32 years old, but the possibility of Champions League football could lead him to sign an extension at Spurs, while his availability should he not do so would also put a whole host of other clubs - including some in the Premier League - on alert.

Craig Dawson

Another former player who has been closely linked to Wrexham is the Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Craig Dawson, who is out of contract at Molineux this summer.

Dawson is now 35, but his experience will attract the interest of others. Among those known to be interested are Derby County, but Derby are also understood to be closely following Danny Batth of Blackburn Rovers, another former Premier League player, and should they agree terms with him, it may be that the Red Dragons have a clear run at securing Dawson's signature.

It's going to be a busy summer for Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
