WSL 2 set up for a thrilling final day | OneFootball

WSL 2 has come down to the wire with three teams in with a shout of lifting the title on Saturday.

Charlton Athletic, Birmingham City, and Crystal Palace are all vying for the title as well as a spot in the top two that guarantees promotion to next year's expanded WSL with the third team facing a promotion/relegation play-off.

Last weekend gave us incredible drama with two of the top three failing to win setting us up for a grand finale.

The Addicks are currently in pole position despite scoring what looked like a stoppage-time winner against Southampton. Emma Bissell came on from the bench and immediately took the spot-kick that made it 2-1 in the 92nd minute.

However, there was a final twist when Atlanta Primus equalised in the 94th minute to make it 2-2 on the day.

While Charlton may be ruing dropping two points, Birmingham City collapsed inside the first 15 minutes at home to Ipswich Town. 

Kit Graham made it 1-0 in the sixth minute and then 3-0 in the 14th minute with Princess Ademiluyi scoring the third that helped Charlton, the club she spent time on loan with last season.

The only team that didn't stumble was the one who looked most likely to fall off the top two. Crystal Palace needed to win and they did with Annabel Blanchard and Ashleigh Weerden scoring in a 2-1 win away to Sunderland to keep them in third place but most significantly, closer to the top two.

So we have the top three teams separated by a point going into the final day. But just to make things even more interesting, it's first against second as Charlton host Birmingham City with the Addicks just one point ahead.

Meanwhile, Palace are at home to Portsmouth who have already been relegated to the National League South next season meaning they'll be heavy favourites and ready to pounce. 

Indeed, the Eagles will be hoping for a draw between Charlton and Birmingham City to take first place however as long as they beat Pompey they'll at least earn direct promotion back to the top tier with one of those teams inevitably dropping points.

Of course, it's not a total disaster for whichever unfortunate team finishes third this season. Should Arsenal defeat Leicester City as expected on Wednesday then they'll know exactly who their opponent is.

The Foxes already faced one of the WSL 2's best sides, Palace, in the League Cup back in November and lost 3-0 at home to the second-tier side so it will all still be up for grabs.
