Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso has responded to Barcelona president Joan Laporta’s recent comments, but his attempt to downplay the message only highlighted the truth in Laporta’s words.

Speaking during Barça’s 125th anniversary event at the Palau de la Musica, Laporta said, “Madrid has a feeling of power and Barça of democracy and freedom.”

He also pointed out that Barcelona develops players through La Masia, while Madrid prefers spending big in the transfer market.

Alonso’s response

Alonso was asked about these remarks ahead of Real Madrid’s Club World Cup clash with Salzburg.

While the Madrid boss tried to appear calm and avoid a direct clash, his response didn’t really challenge Laporta’s point.

“I imagine myself in the context in which he said it, and I don’t want to get involved in that,” Alonso began.

But then added, “We do have a feeling of freedom and democracy, and I imagine they also have some power. This goes both ways.”

Barcelona’s identity remains clear

Despite Alonso’s attempt to brush aside the issue, Laporta’s message remains strong. Barcelona’s values of democracy, freedom, and youth development through La Masia are not just words—they are the core of the club’s identity.

Unlike Madrid, who often rely on big-money signings, Barça invests in its own. Players like Lamine Yamal, Gavi and Pau Cubarsi are proof that the club believes in building from within.

Alonso’s reply lacked substance and came off as an attempt to avoid deeper discussion. It’s understandable, because when it comes to values and vision, Barça clearly sets itself apart.

The focus is not just on winning, but on how the victory is achieved. With Laporta at the helm, Barcelona continues to stand for something greater than power, it stands for purpose.
