Manchester United returned to winning ways in the Premier League yesterday, beating Ipswich Town 3-2 despite playing with 10 men for over half of the fixture.
Left wing-back Patrick Dorgu was given a straight red card just before the break for serious foul play on Ipswich forward Omari Hutchinson, with United leading 2-1 at that point.
Ipswich restored parity before the end of the first half, but United quickly retook the lead two minutes after the restart through a header from Harry Maguire.
Maguire’s goal secured the maximum points for the Red Devils, ending their winless streak in February and securing their first victory at home in four games.
Despite their spirited performance, pundit Craig Burley was not impressed with Man United.
He told ESPN FC: “You learn nothing. He (Ruben Amorim) might say character because they went down to ten men.
“Dorgu had a disastrous evening – the tackle was a horror tackle. It is kind of where they are, but just three points, nothing more.”
While Ipswich are not a great side, United deserve praise for getting a victory against them despite their numerical disadvantage for most of the game.
The Red Devils quickly took the lead at the start of the second half and defended doggedly afterwards.
Ipswich dominated possession in the second half but struggled to break United down and failed to create any significant chances.
The away side recorded eight shots after the break, but five of them came from outside the penalty area, indicating how well United defended.
It was the second consecutive game that Man United could have lost, having dug deep to turn around a two-goal deficit at Everton last weekend.
However, they showed character to prevent defeat and deserve credit for their tenacity.
