The verdict on Kieran Trippier's Rob Edwards sacking has emerged from Wolverhampton Wanderers, with the full-back "considering" his Molineux future...

Wolverhampton Wanderers signed Kieran Trippier this week, but he is reportedly "angry and feels betrayed at the decision" to sack Rob Edwards before the pair got the opportunity to work together.

Wolverhampton Wanderers brought him in from Middlesbrough back in November but they finished bottom of the Premier League and now Cesar Peixoto is replacing Rob Edwards at Wolves for the 2026/27 campaign in the Championship.

Since then, the details of Edwards' sacking have emerged and the handling of the situation has shocked both Wolves fans and players alike after it then emerged that Kieran Trippier is angry at Wolves sacking Edwards, with the 54-cap England international signing on Monday on a two-year deal with an option of a third year.

In fact, Trippier is now considering his future at Wolves, having only signed a pre-contract that comes into effect in July. Sky Sports' Keith Downie reports that he is "angry and feels betrayed at the decision" and is now weighing up other options, given the volume of interest in his services prior to signing his deal at Molineux.

We asked our FLW Wolves fan pundit Thomas Woodhall for his thoughts on the reports that he is "considering" ripping up his contract at Molineux due to Edwards' dismissal. He said: "If it's true, I think it's a bit silly. I don't think many other teams are going to offer him a three-year contract at his age.

"I think it's more of an annoyance if it's true. You've signed to play for Wolves, not Rob Edwards. There's never a certainty in management in football. Even if he was here for six months and then sacked, what difference does it make?

"From what I can understand, sources close to the club have said that's not true. Even if it's a pre-contract, he's obviously still signed. Apparently people are saying there's nothing in him ripping his contract up at all.

"I think a lot of players would be upset at the way it's been handled. He obviously had a good relationship with Edwards. No, I don't think that's going to happen.

"Like I said, though, if it's true, it doesn't put him in a good light, to be honest. Because, yeah, you've signed to play for Wolves. I hope it doesn't affect him and how he takes to the new club that he's joining.

"If that's what he wants to do and if it is true, then bye bye. We don't need to keep players around that aren't happy. Regardless of how good he is, you don't want players that don't want to be here.

"So if he's actually considering ripping the contract up, rip it up. Go somewhere else. I'd love him to be at the club, as I think he's incredible. I think he'd do a right job for us.

"But we don't need more toxicity in the changing room. We've had enough of that over the last few years."

Wolverhampton Wanderers have made the right decision with Rob Edwards

While Wolves could perhaps have handled Edwards' departure with a little more tact, given how unceremonious it was, it is difficult to argue against the decision itself. Winning just five of his 30 matches was a poor return for a club expecting to improve, even if they were not expected to survive the drop to the Championship following relegation.

Beyond the results, there are also questions over whether Edwards was the right stylistic fit. Much of his previous success came with underdog teams that were happy to cede possession, stay compact, and strike on the counter-attack. Wolves, however, are one of the division's biggest clubs next season and will regularly face opponents sitting deep against them.

That requires a different skill-set. Harsh though it may seem, the club's hierarchy have likely concluded that a change now gives them the best chance of mounting a serious promotion push. Wolves are required to be the "big dogs" rather than underdogs and Edwards' style of play is very much not that.
