BVB were the dominant team, however, the most chaotic scene of the match took place in the first half of the game, in the Dortmund penalty area when Capaldo's header hit the crossbar (39). Carney Chukwuemeka put BVB ahead in the 64th minute, but Königsdörffer scored the equaliser to make it 1-1 in extra time.
Scenario: Third-placed facing the 13th-placed opponent. Historically, Borussia Dortmund have won more points at HSV (27) then lost there (24), and despite an eight year absence, they had still scored the most away goals (81) at Volksparkstadion.
Personnel matters: Three days after the Champions League match in Manchester (4-1), head coach Niko Kovac came up with four changes in the team. Captain Emre Can, the central midfield axis of Jobe Bellingham and Pascal Gross, and striker Carney Chukwuemeka came into the starting 11 for Ramy Bensebaini, Marcel Sabitzer, Felix Nmecha and Karim Adeyemi (who were all on the bench).
Tactics:Both teams started in identical formations (3-4-3). HSV pressed Borussia, who were in possession, on their own half and defended in a 5-4-1 formation. Hamburg relied on a deep block and counter-attacks after taking possessesion. They then launched attacks at high speed with a great number of players.
The match & analysis:Borussia Dortmund started the match with determination, pressing high and looking for scoring opportunities. After five minutes, Svensson, coming from left side of the box, aimed for the right corner but Torunarigha skidded in to intercept and likely prevented what would have been the 1-0. Hamburg subsequently defended with increasing intensity, conceding several free kicks and causing the previously controlled game to become rather chaotic around the 20th minute. A foul on Chukwuemeka, on or near the edge of the penalty area, went unpunished.
Borussia Dortmund had 7-1 shots on goal and 60% possession. But against an aggressively playing Hamburg side, they only managed to create another scoring opportunity after about half an hour: the very active Chukwuemeka fired Beier's cross well wide (36). On the other side, a counter-attack led to a great chance for HSV, but Capaldo headed the ball against the crossbar (39).
The second half began with a painful incident: after a Hamburger corner ball was cleared, Schlotterbeck pressed forward and just as he attempted to clear the ball near the touch line, Torunarigha put his foot in. After a long treatment, the defender of the German national team was able to continue. The game went on much as before with Dortmund being the dominant team and the hosts fiercely defending and keeping the spaces tight. There were no surprises at this point. Instead, it was a set piece that led to a goal: after a corner was cleared, Ryerson launched a shot into the box, the shot was blocked at the five meter line and rebounced to Groß, who crossed the ball into the penalty area on the right. Schlotterbeck crossed it inside and Dortmund's most dangerous attacking player Chukwuemeka was perfectly placed to take the shot and score from about 13 meters (64).
Hamburg switched to more offensive play and, after a wrong pass by Gross, Glatzel had a chance to equalise but Kobel got down in time to save his shot from 15 meters (77). Dortmund continued to press high but failed to make use of the gaps against the now more offensively playing HSV. Seven minutes were added to the game and HSV pressed forward. Dompé's shot was blocked (90+6), but Königsdörffer headed the ball into the corner making it 1-1.
Outlook: The next match is a home game on Saturday 22 November (15:30 CET, live on Sky), against VfB Stuttgart.Boris Rupert
