Cole Palmer had been playing better recently, but today he wasn’t able to get the goal or assist his team needed to win.
Chelsea drew with Burnley today, and there were a lot of factors that went into it.
For one, the goal they conceded in extra time was so poor. The Blues’ inability to defend set pieces is killing them this season.
Wind things back, and you’ll see that they were put under that sort of pressure in part because of the foolish red card for Wesley Fofana, who picked up a really unnecessary second yellow.
But the reality is that we had the chances to win the game, and didn’t take them. And nobody was more guilty of that than Cole Palmer.

The stats from the game show it clearly. Palmer had 4 shows, the joint most of anyone in the game, but only got one on target. He attempted 5 dribbles, and only succeeded in one of them. Chelsea had two “big chances” in the game, one was taken by Joao Pedro, the other was missed by Palmer.
One of those shots he took off the toes of Enzo Fernandez, who was in a far better position to score – although you can’t blame Palmer for not knowing that. The attacking midfielder had 9 touches in the opposition box, more than double anyone else on the pitch – but still couldn’t get the goal or assist we desperately needed.
All of this, incredibly, came in just 74 minutes before he was taken off following the Fofana red.
He wasn’t terrible, but today we needed him to be on his game to win the match, and he wasn’t.
The late equaliser for Burnley came from a corner, and the marking was truly shocking despite the number of central defenders on the pitch.
