Football League World looks at who has departed Charlton Athletic this calendar year

Charlton Athletic's first campaign back in the Championship since the 2019/20 season was an overall success, as they achieved their main goal of staying in the division.

Nathan Jones' side was one of the early frontrunners in the second tier, using the momentum gained from their League One play-off final win last year to end up in the top six at the start of November.

However, reality hit them in the form of a five-game losing run, and in the end, the Addicks spent more time in the bottom half than they did near the top six for the rest of the campaign.

Nevertheless, Charlton will be playing in the Championship in successive seasons for the first time in a decade, and they'll be hoping to establish themselves further in the second tier in 2026/27.

But, they won't be doing it with these players, who departed the club in 2026, whether that be sales in January, loanees returning to their parent clubs or out-of-contract Addicks stars at the end of the campaign. Here's where all 10 of them are now

Ashley Maynard-Brewer - Dundee United

Starting with those who left the Valley in January, Ashley Maynard-Brewer's decade-long association with Charlton came to an end midway through the campaign when the goalkeeper joined SPL side Dundee United.

The Aussie was never truly first choice at Charlton, but did make 19 appearances in League One last season, keeping eight clean sheets, which helped the Addicks finish in the play-offs and ultimately achieve promotion.

At Dundee United, Maynard-Brewer started every game since his arrival, keeping two clean sheets in 10 outings. However, a dislocated shoulder suffered in the penultimate game of the regular season saw him out for the remainder of the campaign.

Onel Hernandez - Port Vale/Free Agent

Onel Hernandez's time at Charlton Athletic was short-lived, coming to the club in late September on a short-term deal until January to help bolster the Addicks ranks after the first few months of the campaign.

After just six appearances for Nathan Jones' side, the former Norwich City wideman didn't have his deal extended, and he signed another short-term deal at League One struggler Port Vale until the end of the season.

The 33-year-old couldn't stop Vale from avoiding the drop to League Two, but became a fan favourite during his short time there. The Valiants wrote in their retained list that he is out of contract, but has been invited to train at the club throughout pre-season.

James Bree - Southampton

When James Bree was sent out on loan to Charlton, reuniting with Nathan Jones, who was his boss at Luton Town, many felt that the 28-year-old's time at Southampton was coming to an end, with him out of contract at the end of the season.

However, an exceptional first half of the campaign at the Valley, where he netted twice and provided three assists, combined with a change of manager at St Mary's, saw him retained by the Saints when his loan deal came to an end in January.

As of writing, Southampton are yet to publish their retained list, with there, understandably, being a few more issues to hash out first in the aftermath of their Spygate punishment, so it'll be intriguing to see where Bree's future lies next season.

Jerome Roussillon - Amiens

Jerome Roussillon's time at Charlton was a strange one.

Arriving with quite a bit of fanfare following his storied career in France and Germany, where he played in both the UEFA Champions League and Europa League, the 33-year-old never played a game for the Addicks and announced his departure just two months later.

He would sign a short-term deal with French second-tier side Amiens SC for the rest of the season, but it's unknown whether that will be extended, especially given their relegation from Ligue 2 this year.

Luke Chambers - Liverpool/Free Agent

Among the loanees set to part ways with Charlton at the end of the season, Luke Chambers arrived at the club in January until the end of the campaign.

He'd just come off the back of a lengthy injury sustained during his second loan spell at Wigan Athletic in 2024/25, and managed to maintain his fitness throughout the second half of the season at the Valley, starting 16 of the 19 Championship games he was available for.

It's heavily expected that the 21-year-old's contract comes to an end at Anfield this summer, so it'll be intriguing to see where the left-back ends up over the summer, whether that's back at Charlton or elsewhere.

Harry Clarke - Ipswich Town

On the opposite flank, Harry Clarke also played a vital part at wing-back in the second half of the campaign, as he too returned to fitness on loan at the Valley after not playing a part in Ipswich Town's season after a knee injury in pre-season.

The Ipswich-born 25-year-old returns to Portman Road now, where the Tractor Boys have an option to extend his contract, which is set to run out this summer, by an extra year; an option you'd expect them to take just to avoid losing him for free.

He hasn't played a senior game for his parent club since January 2025, though, so a permanent route out may be explored this summer.

Conor Coady - Wrexham

Conor Coady was one of Wrexham's bigger-name signings last summer, given his leadership qualities and Premier League experience at the likes of Wolves, Everton and Leicester City.

The 33-year-old signed a two-year deal in North Wales, but after five starts, during which Phil Parkinson's side conceded 10 goals, Coady was phased out of the team, not playing a league game again for his parent club.

Charlton benefited from his loan, as the centre-back put in some good performances in the centre of midfield to help the Addicks stay up, scoring a vital goal in a win against Middlesbrough, too.

He'll return to Wrexham, but likely, his future lies elsewhere.

Jayden Fevrier - Stockport County

It's always an eyebrow-raiser when someone moves on loan to the division above, but as Tanto Oalofe moved from Charlton to Stockport County on loan in January, Jayden Fevrier went the opposite direction.

The direct attacking midfielder didn't play much of a part in Charlton's campaign in the second half of the season, starting just four of his 11 Championship appearances, all of which came in the final five games of the season.

He did grab a couple of goals, including a brilliant strike against Hull City in his final game at the Valley. With his contract not up until 2027 at the earliest, as Stockport hold a year's option, the 23-year-old will return to Edgeley Park this summer.

Luke Berry - Free Agent

And finally, Charlton's retained list outlined the departures of a couple of senior names at the end of their contracts.

Luke Berry is the more high-profile of the pairing, joining the Addicks at the start of the 2024/25 campaign, linking up with old Luton boss Nathan Jones.

He made 41 appearances in League One last season to help Charlton back into the second tier, but would play fewer than 500 minutes in the Championship this season, starting just six times.

Terry Taylor - Free Agent

And finally, Terry Taylor, who has spent the last 18 months on loan at Northampton Town, will also depart Charlton at the culmination of his contract this summer.

The 24-year-old was a solid pickup back in 2023 after a good season at Burton Albion, but never got going in a Charlton shirt, making just 21 appearances for the Addicks in all competitions.
